It’s Where I Live

Where We Live Tolita Dukes

As a uni student, I daydreamed about working on the Great Barrier Reef and truly fell in love with both my lofty aspirations and the region when I discovered Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays.

In my 18 years here, I have enjoyed a life of so many wonderful experiences. Learning to dive, learning to ride my horse, falling in love with my soul mate, making genuine lifetime friends and embracing each and every day surrounded by beautiful people in a stunning environment.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me produce this book including family, partners and friends. You have all played such a key role for which I am so grateful. To photographer, Craig Hempstead, thank you for teaching me to see beauty in even the smallest detail. Your insight into every image makes me fall in love with this place even more. To our tourism operators, thank you for your cooperation and inspiration. Off the back of the Whitsundays capturing 12 various awards at the Queensland Tourism Awards, this book is yet another testament to your quality, service and commitment to our region.

I hope you enjoy Where We Live, Airlie Beach as much as we enjoyed capturing it.

Regards

CAPTURING THE EVERYDAY

Where We Live Craig Hempstead

With a keen interest in photography and graphic design,  I have produced four books to date which could  be described as ‘a window into the world of Sydney beach and suburban culture’.

In my earlier publications: ‘A Place on the Coast’, ‘Cronulla’,  ‘Local Images’ and ‘Where We Live – Sutherland Shire’, I’ve tried to portray to the viewer a ‘locals’ perspective and attempted to capture the uniqueness of their environment.  In the production of  ‘Where We Live – Airlie Beach’, I have kept a similar theme which to me portrays a more honest representation of a place, its landscape and particularly its people.

During the production of Airlie Beach, Where We Live, I’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity and friendship encountered in the people I have met and photographed.  These people have invited me into their lives and shared their unique stories and it is a very humbling experience to have been granted such creative freedom and access to these people in this amazing part of the world. I do hope you enjoy my latest collection of images captured of this beautiful part of Australia that is Airlie Beach.

Regards
Craig Hemsptead
